Camp Lejeune Fire and Emergency Services, Base Forestry, and mutual aid units from Onslow County are working to contain two separate developing brush fires. The first one is emanating from the G10 impact area and has burned approximately 900 acres, and has resulted in the closure of the Triangle Outpost Gate for the remainder of the day. All TOP Gate commuters are advised to use the Piney Green or Holcomb Gates to exit the base. Additionally,  Lyman Road between the TOP Gate and Sneads Ferry Road, and Hwy 172 from the TOP Gate to the G29 training range are both shut down until further notice due to heavy smoke and to accommodate the ongoing deployment of firefighting assets. Commuters in the Bear Creek area are also advised to use caution due to dense smoke. The second is coming from the K-Ranges between Marine Corps Air Station New River and Bell Fork Road in Jacksonville and has burned approximately 1300 acres. Fire officials are reporting no current danger of smoke from this fire for commuters in the area, and say it is currently headed in the direction of the New River.  While the cause of both fires appears to be training-related, they remain under investigation.

UPDATE (5:00 p.m.): Officials with Camp Lejeune Fire and Emergency Services are confirming the fire that began in the G10 area is contained and controlled with approximately 1000 acres burned. All previously closed roads have reopened. Drivers are advised to use caution as light residual smoke will be present throughout the evening. TOP Gate will remain closed for the remainder of the day. Additionally, officials stated fire operations in the K Ranges have also concluded with 1500 total acres burned and no structural damage or danger of residual smoke to report.

Officials will continue to monitor conditions overnight.
